How to Care for Your Bed Linen: Washing, Drying & Storage Tips

There’s nothing like the feel and smell of slipping into a set of clean, fresh bed linen. The good news is that keeping your sheets, quilts, and pillows looking and feeling their best just takes a little know-how.

Wash Your Sheets the Right Way

The golden rule? Wash your bed linen weekly. Your sheets accumulate body oils and skin cells faster than you’d expect, and a weekly wash is all it takes to keep things fresh and hygienic. When it comes to temperature, the type of fabric matters: use cold to lukewarm water (up to 40°C) for linen, and warm water (30–60°C) for cotton. Always use a mild detergent and resist the urge to add fabric softener. It might seem like a nice touch, but it actually reduces the absorbency of your fibres over time.

Don’t overload the machine either. Your sheets need room to move around to get properly clean. And always wash similar colours together, avoid mixing your linens with towels, as the friction can cause unnecessary wear on both.

Dry Linen Without Damaging

Air drying is the gold standard for linen longevity, but if you’re short on time, a low-heat tumble dry does the job. The key trick here is timing – pull your linen out of the dryer while it’s still slightly damp. This small step makes a big difference in reducing wrinkles and prevents the scorching that comes with over-drying. Give everything a good shake before you hang it out, and you’ll be rewarded with smoother, fresher-looking linen every time.

Store Linen Correctly

Make sure everything is fully dry, then store it properly. Damp linen is a fast track to mildew, so never tuck anything away while it’s still slightly moist. Keep your spare quilts and covers in a cool, dark, dry spot, and use breathable cotton or linen storage bags rather than plastic, which traps moisture.

A neat little trick: fold your linen sets and store them inside a matching pillowcase for an instantly tidy linen cupboard.

Finally, keep two to three sets in rotation. It extends the life of your fabrics and means your pillows and sheets get a proper rest between uses. Good linen maintenance isn’t about perfection; it’s about the small, consistent habits that keep your bed feeling like a five-star experience, night after night.
